The seventh game of the Sweet 16 sees #4 Duke take on #1 Houston in South Region action. These have been two of the top teams in the country all year and it’s bound to be a great game. The two teams enter their Sweet 16 matchup coming off very different experiences in the Round of 32.

The game is scheduled to tip-off on Friday, March 29 at 9:39pm ET and can be seen on CBS. (Just be aware that this game is being played at America Airlines Center right after NC State vs Marquette. So, if that game runs a little long, the tip for Duke vs Houston will also get pushed back.)

The #1 Houston Cougars are 4.5-point favorites in their matchup with Duke. Houston is given -190 odds to win the game, which comes out to a 65.5% probability to win the game.

Houston opened as a 4-point favorite in their Sweet 16 matchup with Duke, and the total opened at 133. Some sportsbooks still have Houston -4, but most have moved to 4.5 now. One betting app has gone the other way with the spread, moving to 3.5.

Duke Offense Enters Sweet 16 Red-Hot

After a pretty mediocre shooting performance against Vermont in the first round, Duke’s offense exploded against James Madison in the Round of 32. As a team, they shot 52% from the field and an extremely impressive 50% (14/28) from behind the three-point line. The ball was moving from side-to-side and players were passing up decent looks to give their teammates even better looks. The Blue Devils only had 11 made field goals that went unassisted against James Madison.

Jared McCain and Tyrese Proctor did the majority of the damage from behind the three-point line, shooting 8/11 and 4/10, respectively. McCain led the team with 30 points in just 31 minutes, while Proctor, Jeremy Roach, and Kyle Filipowski all scored double-digit points as well. It will be important that Roach is available for Duke after suffering a dislocated finger on Sunday – early reports suggest he will be able to go.

What should be most concerning to Houston, in my opinion, is that we have yet to see Filipowski do much this tournament. After averaging a team-high 16.6 points per game this season, Duke’s star center attempted just one shot against Vermont and only needed eight attempts against James Madison. This is a player who was pretty regularly pouring in 20-25+ points when Duke needed him.

If Filipowski gets going down low and McCain, Proctor, and Roach stay hot from deep, this Duke team will be tough to stop.

Houston Must Stay Out of Foul Trouble & Rebound

According to TheGameHaus.com, Houston has been an early pick from the start of the tournament. However, they were given quite the scare in the second round.

One of the reasons for Houston’s scare in the second round was the foul trouble they got themselves into. The Cougars committed 28 personal fouls, and had to play without LJ Cryer and Emanuel Sharp, both fouled out, down the stretch. For perspective, the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles averaged the most personal fouls per game this season at 21.6.

Houston only averages 17.9 personal fouls per game for the season, which ranks 268th in the country. The good news is Duke only draws an average of 16.2 fouls per game on their opponent (244th), while their Round of 32 opponent, Texas A&M, was 16th in the country, forcing their opponents to commit an average of 19.7 fouls per game.

The Cougars cannot get themselves into foul trouble again. Not only will Duke make them pay from the charity stripe – A&M only made 29 of their 45 free throws (64%) – but Houston is going to need all their shooters on the floor in the game’s biggest moments.

Another factor that led to Houston’s near-exit was all the offensive rebounds they gave up to A&M. The Aggies grabbed 22 offensive rebounds, which included 12 in the second half. Once again, there’s a bright light here in that Texas A&M led the nation, by a fair amount, in offensive rebounds per game – they averaged 15.3 per game and the second-best was just 13. Duke only averages nine offensive rebounds per game (129th), and Houston only allows 8.7 per game (196th).

If Houston allows Duke to hit the glass and get some second chance looks, that’s where the Blue Devils could start heating up from behind the three-point line.

While there are plenty of college basketball stats I could list our for comparison, the stats below are the ones I believe to be most important for this matchup:

As I mentioned above, I believe three-point shooting and offensive rebounding will play a big role in determining who advances to the Elite Eight.

Duke vs Houston Predictions & Pick

In spite of Houston’s struggles in the second round, I do still see them as the better team in this matchup. I believe A&M was able to exploit Houston in ways the vast majority of teams cannot – on the offensive glass and by putting them in foul trouble by slashing so well. I don’t believe Duke can apply the same pressure.

However, Houston’s inability to put the Aggies away late does concern me a little. They don’t have a ton of scoring depth and can be a little too reliant on offensive rebounds at times. So, I don’t feel great laying the points here, as I think Duke has the offensive firepower to keep this one close. Instead, I am going to craft another same-game parlay with Houston moneyline and LJ Cryer to score 12+ points.

Cryer has scored 20 and 17, respectively, in Houston’s two tournament games, and has scored at least 12 in ten of Houston’s 12 wins that came by 10 points or less. When the Cougars win close games, which this one projects to be, Cryer scores.

Pick: Houston moneyline & LJ Cryer 12+ points same-game parlay (-110) at DraftKings

If you find yourself in a state that does not allow college basketball player props, you can swap out Cryer’s points for the over on an alternate team total for Houston. The Cougars have scored 100 and 86 points, respectively, in their two tournament games, and have posted at least 67 points in all but five games this season. I don’t believe they’re beating Duke with any less than 67.

Duke absolutely crushed #12 James Madison 93-55 in the second round of the March Madness tournament. The Blue Devils started the game hot from behind the three-point line and never cooled off. They carried a 22-point lead into halftime and only built upon it in the second half.

Houston’s Round of 32 matchup with Texas A&M was much closer, as the largest lead by either side was just 13 points and the South Region’s top seed was given a late-game scare. The team given the second-best odds to win the NCAA Tournament watched their opponent hit a three at the buzzer to force overtime, and had to play without two of their stars for most of the extra period. The #1 Houston Cougars did hang on to beat the Aggies 100-95, though, advancing to the Sweet 16 to take on Duke.

Duke Makes Quick Work of James Madison in Round of 32

After convincingly beating #5 Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, James Madison had become a bit of a tournament sweetheart. The vast majority of the ATS money bet on the JMU vs Duke game was indeed on the Dukes. But their backers were silenced pretty quickly, as Duke took a 10-point lead just five minutes into the game, and the Blue Devils never let up.

It didn’t help that Terrence Edwards Jr, the Dukes’ best player and the Sun Belt Player of the Year, found himself in foul trouble early in the game, forcing him to the bench.

The Blue Devils opened the game shooting the ball well, but it was their effort on the offensive glass that led to some open shots to get the team going. Duke finished the game shooting 52.4% from the field but were a scorching 50% from downtown, making 14 of their 28 attempts. Jared McCain was incredible, going 8-11 from three while pouring in 30 points.

Duke’s offense was impressive all night, specifically with their ball movement. They recorded 22 assists to James Madison’s seven. Not only were they creating open shots by sharing the ball, but also continued to find the hot hands.

If Duke shoots the ball this well, they’re going to be tough for anyone. However, thanks an extremely tough matchup ahead in the Sweet 16, Duke now has the third-best odds to make the Final Four.

Houston Outlasts Texas A&M in Second Round

Though it was far from Houston’s best performance of the year, the Cougars always felt in control of their second round matchup with Texas A&M.

Houston gave up ten offensive rebounds in the first half and committed 14 personal fouls before the break. All the fouls led to Texas A&M shooting 22 free throws in the first half alone, but were only able to hit 11 of them. LJ Cryer, who shot 39.1% from behind the three-point line this season, and Jamal Shead, who was a 32.1% three-point shooter entering this one, combined to go 0-8 from downtown in the first half. In spite of all that, Houston still led by five entering the second half.

The first 15 minutes of the second half was much better than the first for Kelvin Sampson’s squad. However, they would finish the game allowing 22 offensive rebounds, allowing A&M to add another 12 in the second half, and still committed 14 more fouls after the break. The offense remained a little off and they committed a few bad, uncharacteristic turnovers, but the defense flexed their muscle for about 15 of the 20 minutes.

The most concerning part for Houston has to be the way they crumbled in the last couple minutes of the game, as Texas A&M ramped up the pressure. Houston’s offense failed to put the game away as they committed some bad turnovers and missed some open shots. Their defense all of a sudden reverted back to the one we saw in the first half, giving up offensive rebounds and committing bad fouls. The Cougars allowed the Aggies three chances to tie the game in the final seconds, with A&M hitting the final three-point attempt at the buzzer to force overtime.

Even without LJ Cryer, who fouled out with a few minutes left in the second half, for the entire overtime period and losing Emanuel Sharp (their leading scorer) very early in overtime, as well as the momentum working against them after allowing A&M to tie it at the buzzer, Houston would still hold on and escape the first weekend, beating A&M 100-95.

In this section, I am going to focus on what I am referring to as “bracket upsets.” This simply refers to games where I am saying the worse-seeded team will win, not considering any betting odds. This section is for those who are filling out March Madness brackets and nothing more. In this section, I am going to reference the odds in helping me reveal the teams most likely to pull off upsets / beat a higher-ranked team in the first round of the tournament. I am leaving all 9v8 matchups out of this section, though, as there really isn’t any upset happening in those games.

Let’s begin:

1. #11 New Mexico to beat #6 Clemson – it’s not often we see an 11-seed favored at all sportsbooks, but here we are. Sportsbooks list New Mexico’s odds to win as short as -147, which comes out to a near 60% chance to pull off the “upset”
2. #10 Drake to beat #7 Washington State – all sportsbooks are favoring Drake with some giving as good as a 55.6% chance to win
3. #11 Oregon to beat #6 South Carolina – not all sportsbooks have the Ducks listed as the favorites to win this game but some are giving them as short as -120 odds to do so, and no book has Oregon listed as an underdog
4. #10 Nevada to beat #7 Dayton – every sportsbook favors Nevada with some odds giving them as much as a 54.6% chance to win

If you’re fixed on picking a certain number of upsets with each seed, here are the 12/13/14/15 seeds most likely to pull off the upset based on the odds:

Best 12-seed upset: James Madison

This is a bit of a close call with James Madison and Grand Canyon, but we’re giving the Dukes (James Madison) the nod. Both of these 12-seeds are 5.5-point underdogs against their fifth-seeded opponents, but you can find longer odds on Grand Canyon beating Saint Mary’s than you can with James Madison to beat Wisconsin.

James Madison is as short as +178 to win their Round of 64 matchup, which comes out to a 36% chance to pull off the upset.

Best 13-seed upset: Samford

When you look at the significant March Madness injuries, there is no team more banged up than Kansas right now. Kevin McCullar Jr has already been ruled out for the tournament, and Hunter Dickinson dislocated his shoulder on March 9 but is expected to play.

Samford is as short as +228 to pull off the upset, which comes out to a 30.5% chance to win the game.

Best 14-seed upset: Morehead State

Though Illinois may have the best metrics of the 3-seeds in this tournament, the same can be said about Morehead State against the other 14-seeds. The Eagles are as short as +525 to win, which implies a 16% chance.

Best 15-seed upset: Western Kentucky

Picking a 15-seed to move on in your bracket is not for the faint of heart. (It doesn’t happen that often.) If you’re set on picking one of these teams to move on, Western Kentucky is being given the best chance by sportsbooks. The Hilltoppers odds to win can be found as short as +650, which comes out to a probability of 13.3%.

March Madness First-Round Underdogs the Public Likes

In this section, I am focused on the real underdogs, based on the March Madness odds. The underdogs I am surfacing up here are the ones receiving the majority of moneyline handle. Here’s the dogs the public likes in the first round of the tournament (again, leaving out 9v8 matchups):

1. #11 NC State (+180) – 92% of moneyline handle
2. #6 Clemson (+124) – 76% of moneyline handle
3. #13 Samford (+250) – 58% of moneyline handle
4. #6 South Carolina (+100) – 57% of moneyline handle

Best March Madness First Round Underdogs to Bet

In this section, I am focusing on underdogs (based on betting lines) again, but am surfacing up the teams paying out plus-money to win that I am betting. Here’s who I like:

Samford (+250) at BetRivers

I mentioned Kansas’ leading scorer, Kevin McCullar Jr, already being ruled out for the NCAA Tournament earlier, but I didn’t get into the impact his absence has already had on the Jayhawks. McCullar left their regular season finale against Houston after just 15 minutes, and Kansas went on to lose 76-46. They also lost 72-52 to Cincinnati in the Big 12 Tournament without him.

I’m confident if the selection committee knew McCullars would miss the tournament, we would have seen Kansas come in as a 6/7-seed. KenPom ranks them 22nd overall and they’re 19th in NET.

Samford is a good 13-seed who plays fast and can score. In a game where Kansas will need their offense, I don’t believe they’ll get it done without McCullars.

Colorado State (+125) at bet365

My previous pick is more about me not liking Kansas, but this one is me really liking Colorado State. They’re very good at both ends of the court, play with a good tempo for the tournament, and get strong guard play from Isaiah Stevens. However, you can say all the same things about Texas.

I feel this is a coin-toss game and therefore really like the +125 odds available with Colorado State.

Morehead State (+575) at bet365

I am a subscriber to the “slow beats go” mentality in March Madness. When a team is used to having a lot of possessions in a game, they tend to get frustrated quickly when they’re all of a sudden slowed down. Illinois averages 69.9 possessions per 40 minutes, which is 56th. Morehead State plays at a much slower pace, only averaging 64.2 possessions per 40 minutes (335th).

As long as Illinois doesn’t come out and shoot the lights out in the first five minutes of the game, which they are certainly capable of doing, I think Morehead State’s pace can really bother them and get them out of their groove.

Also, if Colorado happens to hold on to their lead tonight and opens as an underdog against Florida, I’ll be betting them as well.

If you simply wanted to bet Tennessee to win the game, a $20 bet would only stand to win $0.36 and return $20.36. Based off the odds, Tennessee has a 98.2% chance of beating Saint Peter’s.

If you are just here for the odds, the spread is 21.5 basically everywhere. You can find the total at 130 at DraftKings if you’re looking to bet the under. I would not recommend betting Tennessee’s moneyline, even at the best price you can find it, but if you think Saint Peter’s is about to make another run, FanDuel has their best ML price at +2000.

The total in this game is set at 129.5, which is the lowest total of any game in the first round. This is a result of Saint Peter’s slow pace of play and both teams defending well, especially the Volunteers. This Is Not the Same Saint Peter’s Peacocks from 2022

Saint Peter’s improbable run in the 2022 NCAA Men’s Tournament was a lot of fun – at least for those who didn’t have Kentucky bets / going far in their bracket. It’s very easy to get caught up in these fun stories during March Madness, but this is not the same Saint Peter’s team from 2022.

The 2022 Peacocks were by far the best #15 seed in the tournament when viewing KenPom’s Adjusted Efficiency Margin. They were ranked #102 overall and had similar metrics to many of the tournament’s 12 & 13 seeds. Their defense was very good, ranked 25th in KenPom’s Adjusted Defensive Efficiency, and their offense was ok.

The 2024 Peacocks are just not that. They came into the MAAC Tournament as the #5-seed and recorded two-point wins in each of their first two games, followed by a five-point win over Fairfield in the championship to earn their bid to the big dance. Their defense is still good, but they rank 76th in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency. Their offense, however, is not good. They rank 305th in KenPom’s Adjusted Offensive Efficiency metric. The Peacocks are 187th overall in KenPom’s rankings, which is the worst among all 15 seeds, and are 188th in NET Rankings.

Tennessee Did Not Finish Season Strong

The Volunteers enter the March Madness tournament riding two straight losses. The first came in the regular season finale against Kentucky, and the second was a bad loss to Mississippi State in their first game of the SEC Tournament. The former is certainly understandable with Kentucky being a very good team – plus, it was a four-point game. The 17-point loss to the Bulldogs is a little tougher to overlook, though.

Tennessee is hoping it was just an awful shooting performance, but time will tell.

Saint Peter’s vs Tennessee Predictions

This is a game featuring a very good Tennessee team and a not very good Saint Peter’s team. But I’d be lying if I said Tennessee’s late-season struggles weren’t on my mind. Pair those concerns with the extremely slow tempo the Peacocks play, only averaging 64 possessions per 40 minutes (338th), and I don’t feel very good laying 21.5 points.

I also don’t love either side of the 129.5 total because I’m not confident in which Tennessee offense will show up. So, I’m getting a little creative in how I bet this game, opting for a same-game parlay. If you’re in Tennessee, where betting on college player props is not allowed, I have a two-leg SGP for you. I am taking this spread down to -14.5 and pairing with under 56.5 total points for Saint Peter’s. Both of these are me leaning on Tennessee’s defense and Saint Peter’s struggles to score. You can get this SGP at FanDuel for -137 odds.

If you find yourself in a state that allows betting on college basketball player props, I am adding Zakai Zeigler to score 10+ points to the SGP to boost the odds to +120 at FanDuel. Zeigler has hit this mark in each of his last five games and ten of his last 12. With how poor the Volunteers finished the season, I can’t see Rick Barnes taking his foot off the gas early if his team does find themselves up big. He knows they need to work some things out if they’re going to make a run in this tournament, and this game presents a great opportunity to do so.

Pick: Tennessee -14.5 & Saint Peter’s Under 56.5 Points & Zakai Zeigler to Score 10+ Points (+120 Same-Game Parlay) at FanDuel

Both MSU & MSST Enter the Tournament Riding Cold Streaks

No one is accusing either Michigan State or Mississippi State of being on any sort of hot streak. Both teams have lost five of their last seven games, but most of the Bulldogs recent losses at least came to quality opponents. Four of their losses came against top-25 ranked teams, one of which was on overtime loss to South Carolina and another was a two-point loss to Kentucky.

Michigan State, on the other hand, has three bad losses on their record from late in the season. Though two of them were decided by three points or less, they were to non-tournament teams (Iowa, Ohio State, and Indiana) and two of which came at home. For the record, their other two losses in their cold streak came to Purdue.

However, sportsbooks obviously aren’t too concerned about Tom Izzo’s team heading into the tournament, as they’re not only favored to get by Mississippi State, but they also have the sixth-best odds to make the Final Four among teams in the West Region.

Instead of giving you a full breakdown of every team stat available, I have only included the ones I feel are most important to this matchup.

I use the phrase “low & slow” for not only my grill/smoker, but also when it comes to March Madness. I’m a big fan of teams who can keep the score low with good defense and play at a slow pace, making every possession so valuable.

When looking at the stats for these two teams, they both check those boxes. However, one team just does it better than the other and has been tested more as well.

Michigan St vs Mississippi St Picks for Rd 1

If Mississippi State drew any of the other #9 seeds in this tournament, I am likely taking them to win in the first round – dependent upon the odds, of course. I actually like Miss State and the style of basketball they play, but this was maybe the worst matchup the Bulldogs could have drawn, in my opinion.

Michigan State plays better defense, shoots the ball better, and plays slower than Mississippi State. The only way the Bulldogs can overcome this, outside of MSU just having an awful day shooting, is to hit some threes and make their free throws. But they don’t do either of those things.

On top of that, this MSU team has that classic underachieving/underappreciated Izzo feel about it, which is typically the formula for a Sweet 16 run.

With these teams both playing so slow and defending so well, I’m also taking the under. The total has gone under in six of MSU’s last eight games as well as each of MSST’s last three.

The ACC regular season came to an end Saturday night with all eyes on UNC at Duke. The Tar Heels held off the Blue Devils, winning 84-79 and clinching the top seed in the ACC Tournament. How to Claim Fanatics Sportsbook’s $1,000 Bonus Bets

The third part of Fanatics Sportsbook’s North Carolina promo does require some effort and risk on your end. The $1,000 is broken down into potential $100 bonus bets each day, for ten straight days.

To start the ten days of bonus bet rewards, go to the “Promos” section of the Fanatics Sportsbook app and Opt-In to “Day 1 of 10: Bet Match.” As I mentioned, you cannot do this until March 11 but have to do it before March 17 as well. This will start the ten day window. To be clear, you will have to opt-in to this promo each of the ten days. The process for doing so is the same each day. Once you have opted-in, you now have to go place your qualifying wager, which requires you using a token in the betslip. It’s nice Fanatics Sportsbook uses this token so you can ensure your wager meets the criteria of a qualifying wager – must be -200 odds or longer etc. It wouldn’t allow you to use the token and place the bet if it did not meet the proper criteria.

The only thing left to do is decide the size of your wager. This is important because it will determine the size of the bonus bet you receive for that day. Preparing for a Super Bowl party can be a lot of work. Though it may be obvious to some, I want to ensure it is obvious to all: anytime you see a “___” in the props sheet above, it means you fill in your own answer.

When it comes to Question #3, it’s important to know the opening kickoff does not count as a play. The correct answer will be the first offensive play run after the kickoff. In Question #14, the “4th Quarter” answer would include overtime, should the game be tied at the end of the fourth quarter.

In Questions #15 & #16, you will notice there is a handicap being applied. At the end of the game, we will add 15.5 passing yards to Brock Purdy’s passing yards before comparing against Patrick Mahomes’. The same goes for Isiah Pacheco in Question #16, who will have 40.5 yards from scrimmage added to his total before being graded against Christian McCaffrey. In Question #20, if neither player gets a sack, you will just mark all answers right/wrong – you choose what you want to do. (I mark all wrong.) In Question #22 on who will cover the spread, if the 49ers end up winning by exactly two points, it will be a push. So, once again, you can either mark all answers right or wrong.

Also, be sure everyone fills out a tiebreaking question. I always go with total number of points scored in the game.

There are a few things to clarify in this sheet as well. In Question #5 on who will Taylor Swift be shown with first, commercials do not count and we will not start counting until the Super Bowl broadcast begins. In Question #7 on how quickly Swift will be shown, commercials do not count again and we are using the time on the game clock. So, if she is shown for the first time with 12:31 left on the clock in the first quarter, then “YES” would be correct. If there is any less than 10:00 on the clock when she is shown for the first time, then “NO” will be correct.

In Question #12, it does not matter if the penalty is accepted or not. As long as the referees throw a flag and announce a penalty, then that is enough for “YES” to be correct. In Question #15, the fourth quarter will also include overtime if necessary.

In Questions #18 and #19, Ludacris / Lil Jon would actually have to perform with Usher on stage. It is not enough for a picture/hologram to be shown. In Question #25, the Super Bowl MVP does not have to explicitly say “thank you.” The correct answer will just be who they mention/reference first in their speech.

The AFC and the NFC rotate back-and-forth when it comes to who the “home team” is in the Super Bowl. Last year was the NFC’s turn, and the Philadelphia Eagles were designated the “home team.” It is the AFC’s turn this year, meaning the Kansas City Chiefs will be Super Bowl 58’s “home team,” while the San Francisco 49ers will be the “away team.” (I use all those quotations because the Super Bowl is played at a neutral site, which is Las Vegas this year.)

There’s a good chance you’re asking yourself, “what does being the home/away team in the Super Bowl really mean, though?” I’m here to tell you there are really only two things affected: (1) the home team gets to decide which jerseys they wear, and the away team adapts based on the home team’s decision; and (2) the away team gets to call the opening coin toss. We’re here because of the former.

The Kansas City Chiefs had their choice of which jersey color to wear in Super Bowl 58, either their red or white jerseys. Andy Reid’s squad has decided to go with their red jerseys, meaning the 49ers will wear their white jerseys, which seems like a mistake if you are into obscure Super Bowl trends. Only three teams have won the Super Bowl in the last 19 years while wearing their colored jersey. Put another way, 16 of the last 19 Super Bowl winners were wearing their white jerseys.

Before you run to check the Super Bowl odds so you can find the best sportsbook to place a bet on the 49ers moneyline, know that the Chiefs are one of those three teams who have won the Super Bowl while wearing non-white jerseys. If there are any loyal DraftKings users out there, you can get a similar SGP there but it not only comes with a worse price (+122), but you also have to take Likely over 25.5 (instead of 25+) receiving and CMC over 65.5 rushing. (I would recommend you open an account with FanDuel; not just for this bet, but to have the ability to line shop more in the future.)

Caesars’ alt lines increase by multiples of 25, so you can only get McCaffrey at either 50+ or 75+. If you use the latter, your SGP odds will be +150 with them. I’ll break down my rationale for each leg below:

Ravens vs 49ers SGP Pick (Leg #1): 49ers Moneyline

In the simplest words possible, I think the 49ers are the better team in this matchup. The spread opened at San Francisco -4 but has been growing as we near kickoff. (I am seeing SF laying as many as 6 points at the time of writing this.)

If Keaton Mitchell had not gone down to injury last week, I likely would not be adding 49ers ML in this SGP today. I don’t think Baltimore has the explosion without Mitchell to keep up with the high-powered 49ers offense. However, their defense is good enough to really challenge Brock Purdy in the same way Minnesota and Cleveland did earlier this season – both losses for the 49ers.

A healthy Trent Williams (did not pay against the Vikings) and Deebo Samuel (was hurt early in game against Browns and missed Vikings game) will ensure San Francisco does not suffer the same outcome from those games, though.

Ravens vs 49ers SGP Pick (Leg #2): Christian McCaffrey 60+ Rushing Yards

Christian McCaffrey has rushed for at least 60 yards in ten of 14 games this season, which includes each of his last six. The four games he did not accomplish this feat all came in a row, starting with San Francisco’s 42-10 embarrassment of the Cowboys in Week 5, where they just couldn’t get anything going on the ground. McCaffrey only averaged 2.68 yards per carry in that one, a season-low.

Then you have the next week against the Browns where he only played 58% of the offensive snaps and only saw 11 carries, both season-lows. McCaffrey would only receive 15 and 12 carries over the next two weeks, respectively, against the Vikings and Bengals. These were two games where the 49ers found themselves playing from behind early.

When CMC sees more than 15 carries, he has only been held under 60 yards in one of 11 games. When trying to find a weakness in the Ravens defense, I think Shanahan pinpoints their run defense, which allows 4.3 yards per carry (21st). McCaffrey will get his touches early and often throughout this one.

Ravens vs 49ers SGP Pick (Leg #3): Isaiah Likely 25+ Receiving Yards

I actually took Likely to go over his receiving yards in my Ravens vs 49ers props as well. But I’ll take a safer line in this SGP at 25+. You can see a more thorough explanation of why I like the Ravens tight end in this one in that props article.

What I’ll say here is Likely has recorded 40, 83, and 70 receiving yards in the three games he has started since Mark Andrews was lost for the season to injury. As you know, I like the 49ers to win this game, meaning Baltimore is likely to be playing with a positive gamescript for at least a portion of the game Monday night.

Likely has quickly become one of Lamar Jackson’s most trusted targets and the Ravens QB will look his way often when under the pressure San Francisco’s defense can bring.

NFL fans are receiving quite the Christmas gift this year as Lamar Jackson’s Ravens take on Brock Purdy’s 49ers. Not only are these two teams the Super Bowl favorites, but Jackson and Purdy are also the atop the NFL MVP odds. Neither quarterback’s prop for passing yards is set that high, with Purdy at 252.5 and Jackson at 220.5, which shouldn’t be surprising since the Ravens have the sixth-best pass defense in the league and the 49ers are only allowing an average of 210 passing yards per game since their bye week (post-Chase Young addition). Christian McCaffrey’s rushing line is still at a very healthy 83.5, the highest among rushers in this game, despite the Ravens giving up the tenth-fewest rushing yards in the NFL—though, they do allow 4.3 yards per carry, which ranks 21st. Brandon Aiyuk has the highest receiving line among pass-catchers at 63.5, just slightly above Deebo Samuel’s 60.5.

Ravens vs 49ers Prop #1: Isaiah Likely Receiving Yards

Since Mark Andrews went down with his season-ending injury, Isaiah Likely has grown into a focal point of the Ravens offense. In three starts, Likely has posted the following stats:

• Week 12: 4 receptions on 6 targets for 40 receiving yards
• Week 14: 5 receptions on 7 targets for 83 receiving yards
• Week 15: 5 receptions on 6 targets for 70 receiving yards

As you can see, Likely has surpassed 36.5 yards in all three starts, completely smashing it in each of his last two. Likely has seen a 19% target share and accounts for 25% of Lamar Jackson’s completions in those three games.

Yes, the 49ers have allowed the 11th-fewest receiving yards to TEs (46.9), but their opponents are targeting their tight ends at a high rate. Opposing TEs are seeing an average of 7.7 targets per game against San Francisco, which is tied for eighth-most. I also find it hard to look at average tight end stats because so few teams actually feature a tight end in their passing game.

Here’s what it has looked like when the 49ers have faced pass-catching tight ends:

• vs Darren Waller in Week 3: allowed 3 receptions for 20 receiving yards on 7 targets (Giants offense is bad)
• vs Zach Ertz in Week 4: 6 receptions for 53 receiving yards on 10 targets (pre-Trey McBride breakout)
• vs David Njoku in Week 6: 3 receptions for 24 receiving yards on 4 targets (PJ Walker at QB)
• vs TJ Hockenson in Week 7: 11 receptions for 86 yards on 12 targets
• vs Evan Engram in Week 9: 4 receptions for 12 yards on 7 targets
• vs Trey McBride in Week 15: 10 receptions for 102 yards on 11 targets

The data above shows us San Francisco has been vulnerable to athletic tight ends who are targeted in the passing game. (For the record, Dallas Goedert did not play when the 49ers took on the Eagles in Week 13. Jack Stoll got the start at TE with Goedert injured, but Albert Okwuegbunam saw the most snaps at TE.)

I foresee Baltimore being forced into a positive (pass-heavy) game script in this one, and Jackson will continue looking for his guy Likely.

The best price for this bet is actually found at bet365, but they’re only available in seven US states (NJ, CO, OH, VA, IA, KY & LA). If you are in one of those states and want to tail this bet, take Likely over 36.5 receiving yards at -110 odds at bet365 .

If you’re not located in one of those states, you’ll have to settle for DraftKings’ -115 odds.

*I am anticipating this line will move ahead of publish; so, know that I would bet this as high as 45.5

Ravens vs 49ers Prop #2: Deebo Samuel Receiving Yards

There are two premises I am leaning on, along with the data (of course), for this bet: (1) the 49ers, specifically Kyle Shanahan, continued to learn how valuable Deebo Samuel is, and grew a further appreciation for him, during his latest injury that kept him out three games, which were all losses for San Francisco; and (2) when times get tough, Shanahan finds ways to get Christian McCaffrey and Samuel the ball, especially when preparing for a physical defense.

Since returning from injury, Deebo is averaging 8.4 touches per game and is turning those opportunities into 80.8 receiving yards and 12.8 rushing yards on average. He has gone over 60.5 receiving yards in four of those six games, which includes four of his last five. The two he did not were blowouts over the Jaguars, in his first game back, and Cardinals.

Baltimore’s defense, who ranks sixth against the pass, brings a physicality that I don’t feel suits Brandon Aiyuk’s game as well as it does Deebo Samuel’s. Shanahan is going to want to set the tone in this one early and often and he knows Deebo is the guy to do that for him. I expect the great play-caller to manufacture some touches for Samuel throughout this game and let the bruising receiver go to work.

The same goes here when it comes to finding the best price on Deebo’s receiving yards to go over. If you’re in a bet365 state, take it there at -110. If not, BetMGM is not far off with their -111, thankfully.

Saints vs Rams Touchdown Scorer Props

To the surprise of few, Christian McCaffrey is given the best odds to score the game’s first touchdown at +310, and has the best odds to score anytime at -255. Gus Edwards has the best odds to score the first TD among Ravens players. Same goes for anytime TD odds among Ravens players, as Edwards is +120.

Ravens vs 49ers Prop #3: Gus Edwards Anytime Touchdown

Gus Edwards was the man in the Ravens backfield prior to Keaton Mitchell began his ascension in early November. From Weeks 2-8, Edwards was averaging 13.9 carries per game and saw as many as 19 in Week 8. But even in Mitchell’s slow takeover of the backfield, Gus remained the goal line back and has scored a touchdown in six of his last eight games, totaling 10 touchdowns in that span.

With Mitchell now done for the season, I suspect we’ll see Edwards thrust back into the lead role.

The odds in the table above are from DraftKings, but they are actually the shortest odds you can find for Edwards to score a touchdown. Basically every other sportsbook has a better price, with Caesars offering the best at +163.

What I Like About the DraftKings Promo:

Simply put, the DraftKings promo is so great because you put up $5, which you could get back with some winnings if your first bet wins, and you are handed $150 worth of bonus bets that you can use on whatever betting markets you please. You don’t need to do anything difficult to obtain the $150 bonus bets.

I also really like that the bonus bets come in six $25 bonus bets. It’s nice knowing you get six bets you can make – you could, of course, put all six on the same bet if you wanted to – before having to go back to your own bankroll. The cherry on top is the no sweat SGP/SGPx. This allows you to test out DraftKings’ same-game parlay feature (or the same-game parlay x feature) without losing much money.

(To be clear, you will receive your no sweat stake back in a bonus bet; you do not receive the value of the bonus bet back after that bet settles. You only get the winnings. So, if you were to place that bonus bet on a standard spread/total with -110 odds and won the bet, you would have essentially paid a little bit of juice in the exchange.)

What I Don’t Like About the DraftKings Promo:

If you’re someone with a bigger bankroll – let’s say five figures – then this bonus doesn’t really do much for you. What’s $150, specifically six $25 bonus bets, to someone with $10,000 in their bankroll, right? If this is the case, you’d be better off going with DraftKings’ other bonus: Up to $1,050 in bonuses. (This one requires a bigger deposit but comes with a bigger bonus if you can satisfy the requirements.)

Also, you cannot use any portion of a $25 bonus bet. You must use the full $25 value in the bet. So, if you’re someone who generally only risks $5 (or so) at a time, it can certainly be a little stressful risking much more than normal. Thankfully, it’s not your money being risked. On the other side, you cannot use a bonus bet to partially fund any wager. If you wanted to bet $50 on an event, you would need to place that bet twice – once with your $25 bonus bet and then again with the remaining $25.

It can also be a little annoying having to opt-in to the no sweat SGP/SGPx promo every single day. The other part of the no sweat promo I don’t love is most have reported small maximum bets for the no sweat SGP/SGPx. There are actually two things I like better about bet365’s promo versus DraftKings’: (1) the bonus bets do not have an expiration – just don’t go inactive for 90 consecutive days; and (2) you can use any denomination of the $150 in any bet you want to make. What I Don’t Like About the FanDuel Promo

The biggest thing I don’t like about the FanDuel promo is the fact that you have to win the bet in order to get the $150 in bonus bets. I also really like that there are no odds restrictions attached to the first bet. You can take a swing on a big underdog and look to really pad your bankroll.

What I Don’t Like About the BetMGM Promo

It can be a little scary placing that first bet and not having firm communication that it is going to qualify as an eligible wager. Thankfully, BetMGM does notify you that your wager is eligible for their up to $1,500 paid back offer after you have placed it.

If you’re a bettor whose bankroll is less than five figures, this can certainly be an intimidating offer, and one you potentially may not be able to take full advantage of. What I Don’t Like About the Caesars Promo

I would also argue that Hill’s chances of scoring might be even lower, thanks to the rise of Keaton Mitchell. We could also look to Cam Taylor-Britt and point out that he doesn’t even play offense. He’s a corner who has one career touchdown in 19 games and it’s very rare for him to get his hands on the ball.

Why the No-TD Parlay Is So Thrilling

I wasn’t sure if I should explain this, but here I am. The NRFI caught on like wildfire because it served our desire for instant gratification and allowed bettors to get their fix in the dead of summer when the only sports to bet were baseball – and many younger bettors just don’t have the patience to watch a full baseball game. It was great! You could take your 15-minute break at work to go catch the first inning of a game and sprinkle a little money on no runs to be scored. It also always sucks when you watch the team your player is on kick the ball off first and then allow the other team to march down the field and score. You could lose your bet before your player even takes the field. Not much of a sweat, if you ask me.

The no-TD parlay is different. It is the bet that can bring you a good sweat for the entire game. No matter who has the ball, you’re not just watching for one player, but however you have loaded into your parlay. And don’t you dare forget about special teams! I’ll dive into each one of those a little further below:

Unique Betting Options at ESPN’s Sportsbook

One of the most common general complaints from NFL bettors comes around the anytime touchdown prop. It’s a very popular prop, however, many bettors (myself included) dislike that no sports betting app has allowed you to bet “no” prior to Tuesday.

Here we were, stuck dealing with however short sportsbooks wanted to move Christian McCaffrey, Jonathan Taylor, or even Derrick Henry’s odds to score a touchdown, because they didn’t allow us to hold them accountable by betting the other side. As you may have noticed above, ESPN Bet is not only offering this prop on star players, but also the players who don’t see nearly as much usage. Good User Experience in ESPN Bet App

I’m not here to defame any other sportsbook, so I will not name any names. But we have all experienced other sports betting apps that are not very responsive to your touch, contain very small buttons you are supposed to interact with, are slow to load, and/or are feature clunky swiping options. It can be very frustrating.

So, to be clear, I am not trying to convince you to accept that offer or like it.

But hear me out …

I suspect this slow release / playthrough bonus mechanic might not be a one-time thing with ESPN Bet, which would be good if it’s served as an all-user bonus where no extra money needs to be deposited to receive the bonus funds. If they took the cashback rate from 5% and maybe moved it up to 10%, it would also make a significant difference – instead of a 20x playthrough, just a 10x. Of course, they’re not going to provide these conditions on a $1,000 bonus, but maybe a much more reasonable $25-50?

What I’m saying is, if given the right conditions, this could be a very valuable bonus. I know we all (myself included) love a good 20-50% profit boost on a bet of our choice, but a bonus like the above would be loved as well after users got to see it in action. This type of cashback bonus would of course be more beneficial for users betting larger sums at a time. If that’s not you, be sure you exercise responsible gaming habits by not allowing this type of bonus to either increase the number of bets or the amount of money risked that you are comfortable with.

But there is no doubt a smaller, less strict playthrough bonus for all users would be both unique and valuable to all.

After you have received your five $20 bonus bets + one $50 bonus bet in the ESPN Bet app, all that’s left to do is use them. In order to use them, select whatever bet you want to make, and then you will have to manually select one of the $20 (or $50) bonus bets while viewing your betslip. This is what you will see in your betslip below:

To be clear, these $20/50 bonus bets will not be automatically applied. So, do not enter a wager amount in your betslip, just select the bonus bet.    1. Implied probability of winning the bet = 66.7%
   2. Potential profit = $25
   3. Expected value (A x B) = $16.68
2. If you risk your $50 bonus bet on a -110 spread/total bet
   1. Implied probability of winning the bet = 52.4%
   2. Potential profit = $45.45
   3. Expected value = $23.82
3. If you risk your $50 bonus bet on a +200 underdog
   1. Implied probability of winning the bet = 33.3%
   2. Potential profit = $100
   3. Expected value = $33.33
4. If you risk your $50 bonus bets on a +400 underdog
   1. Implied probability of winning the bet = 20%
   2. Potential profit = $200
   3. Expected value = $40

In order to quickly calculate EV, simply multiply the true probability by your potential profit. As you can see, your expected value goes up as your bet goes on a heavier underdog. Keep in mind, expected value does not equal actual value, but they do converge over a large sample size.

You are dealing with a smaller sample size with just five of these bonus bets. But the general idea remains: don’t waste these on extremely heavy favorites.

If you decide to use any of your bonus bets on same-game parlays, or play SGPs in general, it’s important to know ESPN Bet’s policy on pushes and players who are inactive: not only will that leg get voided, but the whole SGP will be voided as well.
